I think I have a virus, but I am not sure. I do have Norton AntiVirus running, but it might not be up-to-date. Now, when I try to update the virus definition files using LiveUpdate, it doesn’t let me (I get an error). What steps should I take now?

Firstly, it is important that LiveUpdate works - as this ensures that you have the latest virus definition files, and if your definition files are out-of-date, you are not necessarily protected against the latest threats.

Try following these instructions on the Symantec website to get LiveUpdate working again.

In the meantime, you could utilise an online service to check if you do have a virus or not; Trend Micro has a free service called Housecall that scans your PC and gives you a report. I recommend giving it a try.

Some things to be aware of:

  • Not Microsoft Vista compatible
  • You must have Java Virtual Machine installed

The Housecall page makes you fully aware of these things, and provides links to download the relevant bits of software you need if you don’t have them installed already.
